Here and Now

I am currently sat in a meeting with some of the Occupiers and local school students from around Newcastle. I am happy they are here, these are the people the fee rise and cuts are going to affect the greatest.
The sad thing is these are also the people who didn't get a choice, too young to get a vote.
Then again, even if they did, would they have voted Lib Dem? Like I did. Would they have believed the promises and pledges of Nick Clegg too? Only to be lied to in the worst possible way.

I voted for Nick (the prick) because of the pledge; I sat in on discussions involving Aaron Porter and Simon Hughes as well as members of the other main parties last year when the Brown review panel had been put together.
They convinced me the Lib Dems represented my interests, my views, my education. They conviced me my vote was worth something.
It isn't.
Is it?

And so now I'm living in a lecture hall...

On Wednesday 24th November there was an organised protest of students against the government, against education cuts, against tuition fee rises which resulted in the occupation of several universities across the country.

As of yesterday (26/11/10) I have joined the sit-in at Newcastle University.

Omg! Archaeology is so cool/funny/random/interesting/boring/exciting/weird. For one lecture we has to spend an hour describing potatoes so our lecturer could identify each individual potato. Today we went to the keep in the f'ing freezing cold and observed it, also went for coffee with my tutor and audited one of the ancient history modules. Played with Greek red figure pottery. All good. I'm confirmed to go to Stanhope on a dig in July too, gonna try and get a place at Binchester alongside that. I like digging. I've passed Encounters module ^_^ didn't do amazingly but I passed.

Also, if you're in Newcastle, please buy our smelly balls.

Back to uni. Finished my exams. Hopefully they've gone well. I can't see me failing with a 40% pass mark though. I hope I get a 2-1, but will settle for 2-2, didn't revise enough for exam.
Anyway, right now I'm sat on a train to London with Alisa. Just left Lincoln I think. Listening to the Futureheads. It gives me Man Ray. I love Man Ray lol.
On a trip with the archaeology society, going to see the Montezuma exhibit at the British museum. I'm excited. Also looking forward to guest lecture next week.
I'm eating vegan sandwiches I made on train. Ham and lentil paste :D

Family Christmas party at Sedgefield Cricket Club was fun. Dragged Daniel along. Lots of food and cheesecake :D

Santa Claus was there again too. How he finds time in his busy schedule to visit the Lawton's I will never know.

Had fab Xmas lunch with flatmates too. Amy is a star cook :3 This is our shitty tree someone uprooted from the side of the road.

And I bought this book. Because it's one of the only Archaeology text books with pictures on every page. I want to know what paper they used to make it, it's really thick stuff with a matte finish.

So I havn't posted in a while.
Hell, I havn't done anything in a while.
Where do I start?
Uni, I'm at uni... the beginings of which are hazy but I do remember the hazing. Watching my lecturers compete at archery and axe throwing. For the best part I've been ill... very ill. In an ambulance the first week in and having panic attacks whenever I went out anywhere. Given meds and sent to counsellor. I did not enjoy first week.
Then a long, drawn out phase of 'breathing problems'. Is it a chest infection? Is it tonsilitis? Is it glandular fever? Asthma? Wtf? Bloodtests are inconclusive. Gotta keep going back for them. Counsellor tries to pass me off on Beating the Blues programme.
Miss loads of lectures and sleep lots. Then it gets cold and my asthma plays up and I can't sleep because Ricky Road is party sexy central, with people coming and going at all hours. It doesn't help. Can't concentrate on anything for more than a few minutes at a time.
Student finance still not paying me... in fact they won't be paying me my grant until January... or at least I hope they'll be paying me so I can stop borrowing money off everyone.
Their loan didn't quite cover my rent either so I took over £100 off overdraft. Overdraft all used up, £500. Very annoying.
White wine makes me throw up lots.
I become president of Ricky Road and join staff/student commitee for archaeology. Captain Morgan's is actually disgusting.
I did get to see Devildriver with Matt :) and went to the Historical Studies School Xmas ball with people. Saw Up! and managed to get to a pub several times. Daniel was there for me too, took me to see Peter Murphy :D.
Otherwise a pretty shitty first semester, leaving me irritable and anti-social. Here's to hoping the next one will be good and student finance will give me enough to live on.... ((or I'll have to get a job ¬__¬;;))

Well, I've done it people, I'm in!! University here I come. I've managed to not fail at everything and scrape together a B and two Cs as well as pass the PARTNERs assessed summer school.

W00!
Altogether I now have A level Art (b) History (c) Psychology (c) as well as AS level Science in Society (b) Chemistry (d) and Critical Thinking (d). Go me! W00! And well done to everyone else who got what they needed and commiserations to anyone who got their insurance choice or worse, no offer, this year.

I must admit I was slightly disappointed not to get an A in art, but apparently we had a harsh examiner who marked everyone down this year and there's nothing to be done about it. Also would have preferred a B in history, I've ballsed up the final exam though which has brought my grade down.

No matter, I'm in, and that's what counts.

So now I have just under a month before I move into the halls to start freshers week (fortnight in this case) and I am thoroughly excited.

I'm going to be moving into Richardson Road, which I was incredibly annoyed about but am becoming use to the idea of. Ricky Road looks a little like a prison inside with the painted brick walls, sombre colour scheme and 70s decor. I applied for the popular re-furbished places but they've been over subscribed. At least I'm still bang in the centre of Newcastle, a 5 minute walk from the university (and St.James'... ewww).

£300 per month is a bit steep though, it might be central, come with all my bills, £4K insurance and free crockery but my parents rent our 4 bedroom house for that much...

I've managed to nab a 19"HD monitor to take with me too. I really need it for my PS3 which is coming for entertainment purposes. It'll be good for keeping in touch with people who have the PSeye over chat too. I've been able to make my home avatar look like me :D yay

I've invested in some new games to take, I got X-Blades (cheap for a reason) LOTR: Conquest (not as bad as the reviews have made out) Mirror's Edge (unopened) and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (meh, it's okay)

I'm also pretty chuffed that Ricky Road is near the public pool because I've been swimming a lot recently for fitness and am thinking of doing a sponsored team swim with Daniel and whoever else we can get from our collection of swimming friends.
So I'm gonna get myself down there as often as I can for swimmings. Also maybe put my boxing gear to use and find a new kick boxing club. Sooo excited ^_^

Holiday

Well the holiday got off to an unfortunate start, Daniel found a tiny kitten in the middle of the road and after spending a full night trying to do something for him and frantically phoning the pissing RSPCA Sioux was put to sleep. His nervous system had shut down and despite being alive and breathing he was completely unconcious. Vet said he was dehydrated and may have been hit by a car despite the lack of visible or detectable injury. R.I.P Siouxie Sioux.

After a sombre day, I finally got to go on holiday. Windermere in the lake district.

On the first day we walked to Easdale Tarn near Grassmere, 1,000 ft above sea level if my phone is to be believed. It's a gorgeous lake nested high above the village with a waterfall. It's very cold and very beautiful. There were one or two brave souls who braved out for a swim. Daniel wasn't one of them despite stripping to his boxers and wading out to knee deep before splooshing back looking cold and in shock.

Me and Daniel went off by ourselves to Kendal on the train so Daniel could buy mintcake. Then we climbed up to the medieval castle because all the shops were shut :/ and I should take an interest in such things considering I've applied to study BA Archaeology.

This is Helm Crag overlooking Grasmere. I had a panic attack half way up, turns out I'd forgotten I was scared of heights and only remembered when we got close to the top. Everyone is very sunburned from the climb and I can't sleep on my side. Helm Crag bloody steep and you get great views, you can see all the way to the sea :D same as Orrest Head which we climbed but I can't find the photos for. We went kayaking around Windermere and it turns out I am good at kayaking, better than Daniel who sat like a dead weight in my boat because I wouldn't let him row because he can't row in time with me and kept making the boat spin. I'm just happy I found a sport I can do better than him :D he carried both our bags half way up Helm Crag. So I can't pick on him too much.

Daniel insisted on buying fancy Lake District produced eggs of many colours. I didn't like the green/blue ones. They're thicker than usual.

How I survived swine flu and other stories

Well now. Haven't blogged for a while so its time for an update. Let's kick off by recounting the heroic tale of my struggle against swine flu... it was pretty epic.
It was during my two week excursion to newcastle in order to complete the PARTNERS Assessed Summer School (abbreviated ASS by our "hillariously cool" student reps, who spent more time trying to score undergrad pootang than whatever they were supposed to be doing). Successful completion of the course gets my grade offer lowered from ABB to BCC which is pretty awesome.
All you needed to do is turn up to all the sessions and pass an exam and/or essay to complete it. The ASS was going swimingly, I got to visit an excavation site in the middle of a live firing range in Coquetdale, stayed up drinking most nights and had half my lectures cancelled because our historical studies professor got stung in the eye by a wasp and had to go to hospital to have it drained (yum). Because it takes nearly 2 hours to get to newcastle on public transport I got to stay in Richardson Road accomodation for the two weeks but had to go home at the adjoining weekend. (On another note Richardson Road is pretty shit, looks and feels like a prison... well worse than prison, there's no tv or playstation and the windows don't open/close properly. Castle Leazes is awful too, food made me ill).
It was during the weekend I went home I became bad, what had been a sore throat during the week had developed into a headache and fever. Paracetamol took off the worst of it but staying in bed was the best. It was more prominent the Monday morning going back to newcastle, I was finding it hard to catch my breath and fealt tired and hot to the point I thought id pass out. It took me half an hour to walk from the haymarket to richardson road with my case because I kept stopping to drink and breathe. Me and my mam didn't think it was swine flu and I was determined to complete the summer school (I really want to go to uni :P ) but during the first session of that day on module choices there was an announcement that several people in my group had been kept at home with suspected swine flu. Then they read out the list of symtoms: sore throat, head ache, fever etc and anyone with them should go to reception and discuss leaving the ASS (lol) to stop the disease spreading. "Hooray" says I because I am tired and feel pretty crap at this point and rush off to reception who tells me to go back to my room and call my GP.
After several hours of phone calls to various infectious disease departments and the automated helpline of shit I called my own GP who pretty much says "yeah, you should stay in isolation."
Then I went home and my mam went all the way to Darlington to get me some tamiflu because the NHS was still in a state of complete unorganisation. But isn't it always?
But yeah, I got better and didn't die and I have asthma so that makes me even more epic. I really don't think you should worry about swine flu any more than you should worry about other flu, they're on a par in terms of severity, but you're more likely to get the new one. Also don't freak the fuck out if you can't get tamiflu, it was as effective as paracetamol for me so I still have two capsules of it left... I'm gonna Ebay them when the pandemic gets serious :D

The Water’s Fine, Jump on In

Right then... it's time for a massive update. I've been offline for 2 months hereabouts finishing my A-levels and panicking and drinking, so I'm finally back and ready to report all of the latest shizz.

First of all... the case of the crazies experienced about the time I went offline. Well, hmm, yeah... that's over now thanks to Citalopram and counselling and friends I guess... but that's mostly all behind me and I'm ready to spend the next few months lazing around waiting until August and the exam results, during which time another crazy outbreak may take place.

I also got myself a new man, a bit crazy and egotistical but otherwise charming and lovely and has a huge collection of Lego (which isn't a euphemism for anything, honest) ^_^ I found him in the Newman's Quay swimming pool and haven't been able to get rid of him since. They have free swimming for anyone aged 18 and under which is why I am now dedicated to going.

Oh... art exams and shizzle kept me back after college until 8pm for 2 weeks solid but I should have AAB for my three units which is WIN! Hopefully it will all average out at an A for my final A2 grade. Only time will tell. When it all comes back I'll have a whole bunch of art to upload to the gallery though, which will be awesome :D Over the coming weeks I plan to lock myself in my room too and get some canvas out. Get some practice in.

I've also been in the river Wear in my pants with my pals ^_^ as well as enjoyed many a drunken evening in Durham with my pals. So many lols. So little time.

I've been up to other shit too... like seeing Ross Noble live with Ian :D

Yay! I gots my DSi

Well, the DSi camer isn't bad for 0.3 megapixels and you can have a lot of fun with it too ^_^ Like I did. Lot's of image doodling and warping and colour editing which is actually really good.

These two pictures of flowers for example have been taken with one of the colour edit tools, everything is initially in black and white and you can use the touch screen to select areas where you want colour to show up. In these two pictures I've selected red above and green below.

There is facial regocnition sofware built in too which can attach random things like cat ears and glasses, moustaches and the like, just like most webcams and things. I hope I can use this as a webcam at some point.

I used 500 of my 1000 free DSi points to buy Warioware Snapped.... which is absolutely hillarious. I had my parents giving me concerned looks while waving my arms around in front of my DS. Only problem with the game is my pasty white complextion was often failed to be recognised by the cameras ¬____¬;;

So I spent an hour arsing around trying to get the lighting right and a background that contrasted with my skin colour. Hard to do in a house mostly painted beige. It's not a very big game either.... but it's fun.

Well... random weekend... had a bit of a nerd fest on Friday. Two 360's and a PS3 set up in living room, lots of booze and games. Very good. Got some pics too.

I was ambushed by a lovely recruiting chap in Durham, as usual. But the charity sounds good, it works to protect gorillas and wild horses and things, it's one of the few conservation charities though that actually recruits, trains and employs local people in Africa who would otherwise be hunting endangered species for meat and the black market where people buy exotic pets.

Anyway... it reminded me of this Corden and Horne aspinall free sketch :D

Kind of not a lot to write up about really...
Went and bought a nice pile of comic books. I'm trying to make a little Alan Moore collection for myself. I bought Halo Jones, Top 10 and Albion to go with V and Watchmen. I need the second volume of Top 10 now. Brilliant comic book, everyone should read it. Just stared on Halo yesterday.

Also, after taking a day off *evil grin* I went to see Lesbian Vampire Killers, which deserves more credit than some of the reviews I read, but is generally a good cheesy romantic (? I use that word loosely) comedy. I wouldn’t rush out to see it, but hell, if you’ve already seen most of the big movies out at this time it’s worth a look in. It kind of feels like it wants to be Shaun of the Dead… but really isn’t. Meh. I didn’t watch any of Horne and Corden before I saw the movie but their sketch show is good, I spent the afternoon on BBC iPlayer watching the first 3 episodes.

Playstation home has launched this so-called alternative reality game called Xi… like the Greek letter

Anyway, access to the Xi Hub is in the Home Square after pressing ‘X’ at a graffiti logo. Good luck getting on, as with most home stuff it’s glitchy. I managed to play on it briefly but have been unable to get back on due to server issues ¬___¬;; Typical…

I’m having no luck connecting to my PSN account on the web too. I’m trying to make a fancy PSN ID trophy card thing… but it doesn’t like me all that much… this is all I can get so far. Trophies will not connect :(

FINALLY... I got to see the Wathcmen movie yesterday and honestly, I thought it was fantasitc. The modded ending wasn't as disappointing as some people have made out to me... if anything it was slightly more believable than Alan's original plot (although I do much prefer the original squid aliens and would rather have seen that in the movie).
Parts where it had been cut to save time... some were excusable. Personally, the removal of the Tales of the Black Freighter was a fair move for the general release version (they have made an animated version for DVD release though and it will feature in the ULTIMATE* cut :D).
But parts including Hollis' brutal death, the dismembered bodies from the NY destruction scene, Kitty Genovese and Rorschach's mask story, minor changes to the alsation story, the hover scooter absence, no greenhouse of butterflies, the two detectives and probably some more that I havn't spotted yet annoyed me ... probably because I wanted to see them brought to life too.
Hollis' murder is an especially dark and disturbing scene in the novel that really should have been retained for... well... shock and horror. Also the story about Kitty Genovese was a real life event, quoted by Rorschach during interrogation and part of me feels everyone should be made to recoil in disgust from the story. (hopefully the missing parts will feature in the director's or ULTIMATE cut of the film... read about here http://www.collider.com/entertainment/news/article.asp/aid/10993/tcid/1 )

Looking back there are a lot of flaws with the film, it doesn't have the same tension and atmosphere as the novel, but I can't help but forgive it because it looks so goddamn amazing. In parts where they have remade scenes panel for panel I wanted to cry and worship the big screen... much to the annoyance of my friends... who weren't as enthusiastic as me about going to see it. Truth be told I was shaking uncontrollably for the first half an hour (cinemas do that to me sometimes) but I can't decide if it was excitement, sugar rush or both. I do feel anyone unfamiliar with either the comic or the cold war will be completely thrown by some of the story and sit wondering WTF! (probably why there is no squid alien... it would raise the WTF levels)...

I might have to go and see it again because I can't quite decide how much I love it and how much I should be critical of it. "I'm going to be pondering this movie for years" is a good quote that I am going to stick to for a while. For now I'm going to say it's been done beautifully and well... they should all have medals :D

Rhod Gilbert @ the Arc, Stockton

So I went to see Rhod Gilbert at the Arc last night... it was great ^-^

A little too energetic for a man with a chest infection pushing 40, he kept everyone in stitches with his routine which centralises around a nervous breakdown he had in Knutsford service station over an award winning mince pie. Things became a little distracted towards the end with a now very drunk audience trying to explain the culinary delights of the 'parmo' and how to make betchamel sauce to the confused and deaf in one ear Rhod.

I'd recommend going to see his show and I might have to get tickets for him at Edinburgh this year (seeing as he was sold out last time).

Last night was spent with Simon and our friends drinking heavily in the traditional manner to celebrate the 18th anniversary of his birth.

We had fun night drinking in the Cross Keys in Bishop Middleham (who do gorgeous midnight toasties) and spent all our money on cider, sourz and something else. Whatever it was it's made me sleepy today. So sleepy I struggled in my driving lesson around H'pool. Anyway, after staying up 'til stupid 'o' clock all I want now is to shower and crawl like a tired crawling thing into the safety of my bed.... but I can't because I'm going out again ¬___¬;;

Well I went to the Newcastle University open day for a good rut round.... and bloody hell it was marvellous. I think my mind has been made up for sure about where I will be studying in October.

I have always loved the city itself (not the football team mind you... grrr) and the university is situated so close to the action of the high streets with the bars, theatres, galleries, museums, coffee etc. I would be a fool not to go. The lecturers were really friendly and fun... (although mad... but then you have to be mad to do archaeology) and I honestly can't wait to get my trowel stuck into the terra firma...

^ I got my own trowel with my name on it for my birthday... I am awesome XD

... there was also a mention of 8 week excursions to a site in Turkey :D

My first tattoo...

Well I finally got a tattoo :D The meaning of life, the universe and everything... 42

Honestly it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would but it also hurt more than I though it would so I guess that equates to it hurt about as much as I expected it to. All I can say is try not to get tattoos done in bony areas, I've logged a mental note of it anyway. I decided seeing as I've just turned 18 I should commemorate it in the most rock n' roll of fashions and have the iconic number permanently etched into my flesh. I am a huge Hitchiker's fan and the number means a lot to me... plus it was nice and small and cheap ^_^

Oh... and I do realise how fat and hairy my ankle looks in that picture :p

Thought I'd add a quick picture of my scaffold piercing in for good measure since it finally healed up enough the other day to have a full bar fitted...

All I'm doing now is sitting around trying to work out some of the XHTML and stuff for blogspot... then I'm gonna make some shiny graphics and things :D try and brighten the place up a bit.
